When inspecting a removed spark plug, technicians may sometimes find cracks, black lines, or burn-like marks on the white ceramic insulator.

The first reaction is often:

"Is the ceramic cracked? Is this a spark plug quality problem?"

Not necessarily.

Abnormal marks on the ceramic insulator do not always mean that the ceramic itself has cracked.

can reduce surface insulation performance.

4. Oil or Water Inside the Spark Plug Well

If oil, water, or other contaminants are present inside the spark plug well, they may come into contact with the spark plug ceramic insulator or ignition coil boot after installation.

Under repeated high-voltage operation, this contamination can increase the possibility of flashover.

Therefore, before installing new spark plugs, technicians should check whether the spark plug wells are:

Clean and dry.


5. Contamination During Installation

Oil, grease, chemicals, or other substances transferred from hands or tools onto the ceramic insulator may also affect its surface condition.

Flashover, on the other hand, usually appears as a black, brown, or burn-like line running along the surface of the ceramic insulator.

The ceramic itself may still be physically intact.

Technicians can inspect the area carefully from different angles and clean the surface when appropriate to determine whether the mark is superficial or represents an actual crack.

If the ceramic has a confirmed structural crack, the spark plug should not continue to be used.


6. What Should You Do If the Ceramic Insulator Is Cracked?

If the spark plug ceramic insulator is confirmed to be physically cracked, the spark plug should be replaced.

Whether the spark plug socket is the correct size

Whether the tool remained properly aligned

Usually, no.

Ignition coil boot condition

Signs of discharge inside the coil boot
