During engine combustion, the electrode section of the spark plug is exposed to high temperatures. This heat must be efficiently transferred away through a designated path. The "heat range" of a spark plug refers to its ability to disperse this heat. Spark plugs that release heat quickly are classified as high heat range (cold type), while those that retain heat longer are known as low heat range (hot type). This property is primarily determined by the combustion chamber temperature and the structural design of the spark plug.
To function optimally, a spark plug's center electrode temperature must remain within a specific range-approximately 500°C to 950°C. If the temperature falls below 500°C, unburned fuel can leave carbon deposits on the insulator surface. This reduces the insulation between the center electrode and the housing, potentially leading to electrical leakage, weak sparks, or misfires. The temperature of 500°C is known as the self-cleaning temperature, as carbon deposits are naturally burned off once this threshold is exceeded.
Low heat range spark plugs typically feature longer insulator noses, a larger surface area exposed to flame, and greater gas pocket capacity. The extended path for heat dissipation results in slower heat transfer, allowing the center electrode temperature to rise more easily. As a result, these plugs reach the self-cleaning temperature even at lower speeds, minimizing the risk of carbon buildup.
Conversely, high heat range spark plugs, like those offered by BANQIU SPARK PLUG, are designed with shorter insulator noses, reduced gas pocket capacity, and a shorter heat transfer path, enabling quicker heat dissipation. This prevents the center electrode from overheating, even under high-speed or high-load conditions. For this reason, cold-type plugs are ideal for high-performance, high-RPM engines.
Choosing the right heat range is essential to ensure stable ignition performance and avoid issues such as carbon fouling or pre-ignition. The relationship between vehicle speed, spark plug temperature, and heat range is often illustrated using performance graphs.
With its advanced R&D and industry-leading designs, BANQIU SPARK PLUG offers a full range of spark plugs tailored to meet diverse engine demands and ensure optimal performance under various driving conditions.
