Spark Plug Life vs. Replacement Interval

Many people tend to confuse "service life" with "replacement interval" when it comes to spark plugs. In fact, these two concepts are not exactly the same.

If they are not clearly distinguished, two common problems may occur:
one is that the spark plug has already significantly deteriorated but continues to be used; the other is that the spark plug is still in good condition but is replaced too early, resulting in unnecessary cost.


1. Service Life Mainly Depends on Electrode Material

How long a spark plug can theoretically last mainly depends on the electrode material. Different materials vary significantly in their resistance to electrical erosion, high temperature, oxidation, and electrode wear.

Taking several common types of spark plugs as examples:

Nickel Alloy Spark Plug
The service life is generally around 20,000–30,000 kilometers.

Iridium / Platinum Spark Plug
The service life can usually reach around 80,000–100,000 kilometers.

Spark plugs that use precious metals as electrode materials perform better in durability, high-temperature resistance, and oxidation resistance. In theory, their electrodes wear more slowly, ignition stability lasts longer, and their overall service life is also longer.


2. Replacement Interval Mainly Depends on Actual Operating Conditions

The actual replacement interval of a spark plug is not always equal to its theoretical service life. This is because the engine operating environment is dynamic. Different vehicles, engine structures, and driving habits all affect the real deterioration rate of spark plugs.

The following three factors can significantly affect the actual replacement interval of spark plugs.

1. Engine Type

Turbocharged, direct-injection, and high-compression-ratio engines usually operate at much higher combustion temperatures and pressures than ordinary naturally aspirated engines.

Under such high-load conditions, spark plugs are exposed to higher combustion temperatures, greater electrode load, and higher ignition pressure for a long time. As a result, electrode erosion and carbon buildup occur faster, and the actual replacement interval should be shortened accordingly.


2. Driving Habits

Frequent hard acceleration, long periods of high-RPM driving, and heavy-load uphill driving will significantly increase the ignition load on spark plugs.

Even with the same electrode material, the actual service life of a spark plug may differ by 30%–50% between aggressive driving and gentle driving conditions.

In other words, spark plug replacement should not be judged only by mileage. It should also depend on the long-term working condition of the engine.


3. Fuel Quality

Poor-quality fuel may not burn completely and can easily produce carbon deposits, gum substances, and abnormal combustion residues. These substances can attach to the insulator nose and electrode surface of the spark plug, affecting ignition stability.

Long-term use of substandard fuel may lead to poor ignition, engine misfire, increased fuel consumption, and in severe cases, abnormal electrode erosion or melting, greatly shortening the service life of the spark plug.


3. Do Not Rely Only on Mileage - Regular Inspection Is More Important

Because the spark plug replacement interval is affected by multiple operating conditions, BANQIU Spark Plug does not recommend relying only on theoretical service life and pushing the spark plug to its final kilometer before replacement.

A more scientific and reliable method is:

Carry out a professional spark plug inspection every 15,000–20,000 kilometers.

By checking the following items, you can more accurately determine whether the spark plug needs to be replaced in advance:

Whether the electrode gap has become enlarged;

Whether the center electrode and ground electrode show obvious erosion;

Whether the insulator has cracks, whitening, blackening, or abnormal deposits;

Whether there is severe carbon buildup, oil contamination, or abnormal combustion marks;

Whether the spark plug thread and sealing gasket are in normal condition.

This helps avoid performance issues caused by spark plugs that "can still be used but no longer perform well," such as reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and difficult cold starts. It also helps reduce the risk of chain problems caused by overdue spark plug use, including ignition coil damage, engine misfire, and catalytic converter blockage.
