Spark Plug wire! ! Question and Answer

Q:

I'm very confused about the spark plug wiring order on the Jeep

distributor cap.
Looking at the FSM, this should be my order:

I'm confused because the FSM shows the screws in different places relative to the block and the different posts relative to the screws.

I'm chasing down a misfire, just changed the wires (still missing, of course), realized the order was different. I tried to organize it relative to the screws and the Jeep wouldn't start.

A:

the 4.0 distributor housing can only be in one orientation and bolt down (it is not like older engines where you can clamp housing in various rotations to adjust timing)
Since the screw holes for the distributor cap are in the housing their position is also fixed by the only place you can bolt down the housing to the block there is no other possible way to line up the bolt hole for bolt to block

The thing that does matter is the tooth engaged on the shaft that turns the rotor inside the cap that you have to align properly to get rotor in proper orientation with cam rotational position

but as far as housing and cap position don't see how that could be installed wrong (assuming hold down and its bolt are properly installed)

read this highlighted paragraph from FSM including its end in 2nd column on the page
