The "regular" spark plugs of a few years ago have changed dramatically from the spark plugs of today. Today, all spark plugs have enhanced performance. The job of a spark plug is to create a spark within the engine to keep the engine running. Each spark plug has threads that seal the combustion chamber where combustion occurs. A ceramic insulator surrounds and houses the electrode. The insulator protects the ignition voltage. The insulator also acts as a transmitter of heat and directs it to the cooling system. The ceramic makes up the insulator.
Regular spark plugs are made of a chrome-nickel alloy that helps reduce corrosion. These types of spark plugs contain a copper core electrode center that has a very high melting point. Iridium spark plugs are made of a hard metal. They have an iridium tip welded on for optimal fuel economy. The center diameter is much smaller than a nickel alloy spark plug, which focuses a more concentrated spark, but at a lower voltage. These spark plugs are gentle on the ignition system and help extend the life of the ignition system by enhancing the throttle response of the action. It has a very high melting point of over 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, higher than platinum spark plugs.
Although platinum spark plugs may sound like premium spark plugs, they are actually low-end spark plugs in terms of performance. Platinum spark plugs do have a higher melting point than nickel alloys, which helps improve the fuel economy of your vehicle. Platinum spark plugs have as little impact on the ignition system as iridium spark plugs. Generally, platinum spark plugs last much longer, averaging 4 years longer than nickel alloy spark plugs.
Platinum spark plugs are recommended because they do last longer than copper electrode spark plugs. Copper electrodes corrode and deteriorate faster, so platinum spark plugs fail and your vehicle will not start unless you perform a tune-up. However, if your vehicle has other issues that need to be addressed, some issues may cause deposits to accumulate on the platinum. This is why it is critical to the life of your vehicle to perform all regular services as directed in your owner's manual to keep your vehicle running well. Keeping your vehicle well maintained with platinum spark plugs can help extend its life.
