How to test spark plug performance

The methods for testing the performance of spark plugs mainly include the following aspects:

1. Ignition test: Install the spark plug on the cylinder block and perform an ignition test through a high-voltage wire. If the spark plug can produce a strong spark, it means that its performance is good; if the spark is weak or no spark, it may indicate that the spark plug has a leak or malfunction.

2. Short circuit detection: When the engine is in an idle state, use a screwdriver to short-circuit the spark plugs one by one and observe the changes in engine speed and sound. If the speed and sound reactions are obvious, it means that the spark plug is operating normally; on the contrary, if the changes in both are weak, it may indicate that the spark plug has an abnormal state.

3. Appearance inspection: Check whether the surface of the spark plug is severely worn, such as scarring, black lines, cracks or electrode melting. These signs may indicate that the spark plug is damaged and needs to be replaced immediately.

4. Gap inspection: Make sure that the spark plug electrode gap meets the regulations. Under normal circumstances, the spark plug electrode gap should be between 0.8-0.9mm. If the gap is too large or too small, it can be adjusted by bending the side of the spark plug.

5. Carbon deposit and pollution inspection: Check whether there is pollution and carbon deposit on the spark plug skirt. Excessive carbon deposits may be the main reason for abnormal engine combustion, and the spark plug needs to be cleaned or replaced.

6. Real vehicle test: Perform real vehicle test to check the spark plug's sparking and short circuit performance. Observe the color of the spark plug. If there is severe ablation, scarring on the top, black lines, cracks or electrode melting, it means that the spark plug is damaged and needs to be replaced immediately.

Through the above methods, the performance of the spark plug can be more comprehensively tested, potential problems can be discovered and solved in time, and the vehicle operation can be kept stable and efficient.
